Background: Carl grew up in King County, Geogia with his mother Lori and father Rick. It was at age twelve that things changed drastically. His father and mother were having marital issues and Carl once witnessed a fight between them. It's actually in the same day of witnessing them fighting, that his father gets shot in the line of duty and ends up in the hospital. His father, Rick, ends up in a coma due to his injuries. But this isn't the end to his family's troubles. Because it isn't long after this that people start to get sick. A disease that cause the dead to walk after their passing. It spreads quickly, and soon Carl and his mom are forced to leave King County with Shane, Rick's partner at the sheriff's office, to evacuate heading toward Atlanta.

Only Atlanta is overrun too and there seems to be no safe haven left for them. Eventually his father wakes from his coma and is able to reunite with Carl and his mother, who were now in a group of people, with Shane, fending for their lives.

Since the family has been reunited they've been through a lot and seen a lot of death. But the zombies are not the only things they've had to worry about. To the contrary the people they have to be most concerned about are other people. Even Shane, who attempted to kill Rick in order to lead the group, and have Lori and the baby she was pregnant with to himself. In the end Rick was forced to kill Shane.

Now finding refuge in a large prison that they cleared of walkers, they ran into problems with the handful of other inmates already in the prison, as well as a group of people hauled up in a town not far away. The event that had the largest impact on Carl was when one of the inmates tried to take the prison away from them, it resulted in his mother, himself, and Maggie Greene getting separated from the group. This was a problem because his mother started to give birth while they were hiding from walkers. Lori died in childbirth, and Carl was forced to shoot her in the head after she'd died to avoid her turning into a walker.
